What can we plant in our aquaponics system that will help control pests. 

Mint:

It is effective against fleas, ants, mice, and cabbage butterflies.

Thyme:

Discourages cabbage moths.

Oregano and Sage:

Discourages Cabbage Butterflies and the cucumber beetle when planted near cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, and grape vines.

Garlic:

With their strong smell and lack of predators are effective companions for tomatoes and other fruit trees. Rodents and insects avoid them making them very effective is keeping your aquaponics safe.

Basil:

When planted next to tomatoes discourages mosquitos and flies.

Lemon Balm:

Essential oils from Lemon Balm are good mosquito repellent and invites bees.

Marigold:

A beautiful flower that doesn’t just brighten your aquaponics garden up but is also effective against tomato hornworm.

Fish Species that you can use in your aquaponics system

Tilapia is prefered however you will need a  permit to use them in South Africa.

Trout is ideal for very controlled systems, as these fish species have a higher retail value.

Gold fish are the best to start with as they are cheap and they have a fairly good temperature range. ideal for all systems.

Koi is a very hardy species and that can brighten up your system.
